雨がやんだ。
頭上の雲が切れて、わずかな青空がのぞく。
手さげかばんを平たくして頭にのせ、学生服のズボンのすそをたくし上げて、小走りに急いでいた少年は、しばらくの間、雨がやんだことに気づかなかった。考え事に心をうばわれていたのである。
黒くぬれたアスファルトの歩道を歩きながら、自分の歩みにしたがって飛び散る小さなしぶきを、少年は、どうでもいいような目で眺めていた。
このところ、なにもかも、うまくいっていない。このあいだのテストの成績が悪かった。母親は、課外の活動をやめろという。親しかった友達とは、ちょっとしたことから仲たがいをした。好きなＣＤを買うこづかいが足りない。その他、具体的な形になっていないもやもやが、いくつもあった。雨は、自分の上にばかり降るような気がする。いっそぬれるなら、もっともっとずぶぬれになったら、かえってさばさばするだろうと思う。
国道の横断歩道へ踏み出そうとしたとたん、信号が点滅する。そんなことにさえ気がいら立って、少年は小さく足踏みした。
さっきから後ろで、小さい子供たちの声がしている。自分にもあんなころがあった、と半ばうわの空で思いながら、ぼんやり信号の変わるのを待っている少年の耳に、今までたわいもないおしゃべりだった子供たちの声が、急にはっきりした意味をもったさけびになってひびいてきた。
「にじが出てるよ。」
「にじだ、にじだ。」
思わず振り返って、子供たちがまっすぐに指さす空を見上げると、ああ、確かににじだ。赤、黄、緑、太いクレヨンでひと息に引いたような線が、灰色の空を鮮やかにまたいでいる。上端はおぼろに空中に消え、下はビルと森のかげに隠れて、見えているのはほんの一部分だ。
少年は、自分でも思いがけない衝動に駆られて、辺りを見回した。
──高い所がないか、あれが全部見える所が。
あった、すぐ目の前に、国道を横切る歩道橋が。少年はためらわず、そちらへ駆けた。いつもは、階段の上り下りをめんどうがって、ついぞ利用したことのない歩道橋だったが。
階段を二段ずつ駆け上って、車の流れの真上に立つと、にじはまさに、森とビルのとぎれた所、国道の真正面から立ち上っている。手すりにつかまって、少し背伸びしながら身を乗り出すと、このはなやかな橋の始めから終わりまでを、ひと目で見わたすことができた。
さっきの子供たちが、少年の意図を察したらしく、後から続いて駆け上ってきて、思い思いの歓声をあげている。
少年は、大きく息を吸った。この前、にじを見たのはいつだったろう。この子たちくらいの小さいころ──いや、もっとずっと前のような気がする。もしかしたら自分は今、生まれて初めてにじを見たのではないかと、少年は思った。
目の下を、車の列が絶え間なく流れてゆく。かさをすぼめた人たちが、上も下も見ないで自分の道を急ぐ。だれも、頭上の出来事に気づかない。あるいは気がついても、なんとも思わないのか。だれ一人、立ち止まって、この大空のドラマに眺めいるものはない。
少年はふと、初めて、自分のことを恵まれたものに感じた。
「おうい、何してんだあ。」
下から呼ばれて、身を乗り出すと、仲たがいしたはずの友達が、かばんを振り回しながら、あきれたようにこちらを見上げている。
「おうい、にじが見えるぞう。上がってこいよう。」
少年も大声で呼び返す。友達は、少年の指さす方をひと目見て、さっき少年が感じたのと同じ衝動に駆られたように走りだした。歩道の端にけつまずいて、かばんを放り出し、危うく転びかける。
「早く早く。」
少年は笑いながら、体をずらして、にじを正面に見る場所を空け、友達が上ってくるのを足踏みしながら待った。
